Slave Narratives: a Folk History of Slavery in the United States From Interviews with Former Slaves Texas Narratives

There are aspects of our history, as a nation, that are hard for those of us alive today to fathom.  Whether it is because we think we, as a culture, have moved beyond that point.  Or because we simply do not want to believe we, as a culture, ever tolerated such behavior.  There are any number of reasons why parts of our history make us wince, and want to look away.

There are any number of reactions we can have when we read about the saddest, and hardest moments, in our nation’s past.  But, perhaps, one of them could be to acknowledge we have made, at least a little, progress.  We have taken steps, if only baby steps, forward.  To rededicate ourselves to improving our nation, the lives not only of those in our homes, but in our wider community, and our nation at large.  To remind ourselves, in learning from the past, that it takes effort to strive for, and create, a better future.

American Civil War: Civil War: The History of America’s Deadliest War

The subtitle of this book touches on one of the many reasons why so many people believe the American Civil War is one that should never be forgotten.  It is considered America’s Deadliest War, if for no other reason than those fighting, on both sides, were Americans.  No matter who won, Americans lost.

American Civil War: A History From Beginning to End by Hourly History

☆☆☆ American Civil War ☆☆☆

Beginning with the birth of the nation, slavery divided and caused conflict for the United States of America, worsening during the country’s early decades as the practice became more economically vital. Finally, in 1861, the American Civil War erupted after the election of President Abraham Lincoln. Never acknowledging the South’s right to secede, Lincoln and the North fought the South through four long, bloody, destructive years; much longer than anyone thought the war would last.

Inside you will read about…

✓ America in the Antebellum Era
✓ Secession and the First Shots
✓ Early Battles and the Turning Point: April 1861-July 1863
✓ The United States and the Confederacy
✓ Women and Blacks in the War
✓ Military Events, 1863-1865: The War Ends
✓ Reconstruction
✓ The Legacy of the Civil War

By 1865, more than 700,000 American soldiers and civilians were dead (including Lincoln himself), a race of people had been freed from bondage, and an entire country needed to rebuild. The Civil War is of such crucial importance to the history of the United States not just because of these factors, but also because its legacy still lives on.

Army Life in a Black Regiment by Thomas Wentworth Higginson

The past is full of a great many fascinating stories, some we know, others are just waiting to be read.

During the Civil War, American abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higginson served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized African-American regiment, from 1862-1864. His Army Life in a Black Regiment is a fascinating account of his time leading the slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States during the late civil war.

His Dream, Our Stories (Enhanced Edition): The Legacy of the March on Washington

Books like this may be the closest we will come to time travel in my life time.

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Comcast NBCUniversal presents His Dream, Our Stories: The Legacy of the March on Washington, an enhanced eBook produced for Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle for iPad app, featuring intimate interviews with more than 25 individuals, many who participated in the March, as well as community and diversity leaders who were impacted by this historic event.

Through their stories, readers will not only learn about the history of the March, but also of notable events throughout the years that eventually led to that hot summer day in August of 1963.

Included are interviews with key figures of the civil rights movement, such as Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Mamie Chalmers, Marc Morial, and Rev. Samuel “Billy” Kyles, along with others who attended the March in person, watched it on TV, or were too young to participate but were affected by its legacy nonetheless. There is also an introduction by Lester Holt of NBC News.

His Dream, Our Stories: The Legacy of the March on Washington is part of Comcast NBCUniversal’s online and broadcast celebration and will serve as an effective tool for current and future generations to learn about that fateful afternoon and how it helped shape the civil rights struggle in America from that day forward.

Feb – A Month For History

Books can take us to amazing places.  To far off worlds, to places we will never be able to go except in our imagination… and the past it just one example of places we can’t go ourselves.

There are a lot of amazing books that have been written with imagination as the driving force, but there is also a lot to be learned from our history… so we figured, given how much people seem to gravitate towards factual books, we would use the shortest month of the year, to share some history books that will hopefully offer some eye opening reading.

[amazon_link asins=’1974169383′ template=’ProductAd’ store=’cheerupfun-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’cee756b3-0639-11e8-bcb0-ed933ff817c6′]In January 1863 the Union War Department authorized the creation of “a special corps” composed of “persons of African descent”—the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Robert Gould Shaw.
Hundreds of free blacks enlisted. When the 54th Massachusetts spearheaded the suicidal charge against Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, the regiment was showered with acclaim, but that defining event was not its only illustrious moment.
After the devastating repulse at Fort Wagner left all of the unit’s ranking officers dead or wounded, Captain Luis Fenellosa Emilio (1844-1918) emerged as the 54th’s acting commander.
