World History

Trying to sum up the history of the World in a concise book, find the events that define our collective history, or choose the figures who did the most to shape it is no easy task.  No one book is going to contain everything that comes to mind for every individual when they think about World History, and as for placing events and people on a scale and choosing whose contributions were greatest, which events were most Earth changing?  It is a task I’m grateful I’ve never taken on.

Today we are featuring a selection of books that have made an attempt and telling the story of World History, of picking the events and figures who have helped shape the world in which we now live.

The Current War: A Battle Story Between Two Electrical Titans, Thomas Edison And George Westinghouse

In the late 1880s and early 1890s, the introduction of electricity brought with it two competing systems of electric power transmission. A powerful individual backed each system.

On one side was Thomas Edison, the savvy inventor and businessman. On the other side was inventor and industrialist George Westinghouse.

The two of them got embroiled in a nasty confrontation as each of them fought to ensure his system would become the industry standard.

Africa: African History: From Ancient Egypt to Modern South Africa – Stories, People and Events That Shaped The History of Africa

There are times when a book’s description sets the scene, or explains why it has been chosen for our collection, better than any words we might select, this feels like one of those times:

What wove the African continent into the rich fabric of cultures and peoples that it is today?

Where did ancient culture, trade, and civilization begin?

How did the African people survive and thrive despite European colonization and apartheid?

These are just some of the questions you’ll find answers to in African History: From Ancient Egypt to Modern South Africa-Stories, People, and Events that Shaped the History of Africa.

Africa is a vast continent whose waters, fertile lands, minerals, and diverse wildlife nurtured humankind since ancient times until European colonization and exploitation caused immeasurable suffering and loss. To understand how Africa developed, thrived, suffered, and emerged into the rich tapestry of peoples that it is today, take a trip back to the ancient River Nile and the East African coast.

Santa – American Mythology?

Most American Mythology, and stories we teach our children to “believe” in, are borrowed from other countries.  Two quick and easy examples that come to mind are Robin Hood and King Arthur, both from England.

LFrank Baum, was an American author chiefly famous for his children’s books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels.

L. Frank Baum also wrote A Kidnapped Santa Claus.  Santa Claus is an international figure, but he is one that American’s have taken a special hold of, making countless movies involving him.

King Arthur

Products from Amazon.com

The debate will probably continue long after we have left this life… was King Arthur a real man, or simply a fictional creation?  At this point he has reached that mythical level, with many believing not only in the man, but in his realm, in Camelot and perhaps most importantly in the Round Table.

King Arthur inspires those who believe to use Might For Right, setting aside the concept of Might Is Right.  At the Round Table there is no head, making all equal.  Perhaps it is safe to even say, King Arthur created a place modern man wishes still existed.

Copies of King Arthur: A Life From Beginning to End & The Infinite Character of King Arthur: His History and Legend, His Camelot and Avalon have been added to the current CheerUp.Fun Free eBook Collection.  The first 100 people to sign up (new collection as of Feb 1) should receive a free copy added to their Kindle Library.  To sign up, click this link, and follow the prompts at the Amazon page.  Once you have joined the CheerUp.Fun Free eBook Collection, as recommended books are selected and shared during the month, they will be added to your Kindle Library.

Celtic Mythology

Products from Amazon.com

Those inclined to believe in faeries, the little people, and leprechauns, for instance, may find a lot that intrigues and interests them in Celtic Mythology.

The gifted W.B. Yeats wrote of his own people “…even a newspaperman, if you entice him into a cemetery at midnight, will believe in phantoms, for everyone is a visionary if you scratch him deep enough. But the Celt, unlike any other, is a visionary without scratching.” This introduction to Celtic Mythology will serve the novice well – for it is a complicated history with the earliest written records destroyed by the marauding Vikings.

Roman Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Roman Gods, Goddesses, and Mythological Creatures (Classical Mythology)

Today’s featured book is about Roman Mythology.  The Romans and Greeks looked to the same Gods and Goddesses, though they called them by different names, and had different stories to tell about them, likely a result of Greek and Roman cultures being quite different.

Some may enjoy Bulfinch’s Mythology, which serves as a veritable encyclopedia of mythical characters and figures.

Greek Mythology: A Concise Guide to Ancient Gods, Heroes, Beliefs and Myths of Greek Mythology

There are a great many words that can be used to describe history, and how we feel when reading history.  One of the many reasons people give for not reading history for fun is that it is often written in a dry and serious manner… and then there is the fact that while it is said that it is written by the victors, it might also be said it is often written about their victories, and includes a great many deaths, and tragedies.

Mythology on the other hand is a part of the history of many cultures, and yet it is the more fantastic side of things.  It is the way things were explained, and explored, centuries ago.  Myths, frequently called Ancient Myths though they are still told, re-told, and used to inspire modern entertainment, capture hearts and minds, and helped to shape the cultures they were a part of, influencing children during the generations when they were believed to be more than mere stories, but also inspiring untold generations after the gods were no longer believed in.

Copies of Greek Mythology: A Concise Guide to Ancient Gods, Heroes, Beliefs and Myths of Greek Mythology & copies of Patrick Auerbach’s Greek Gods: The Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology have been added to the current CheerUp.Fun Free eBook Collection.

Benedict Arnold: A Life From Beginning to End

Ever wondered how a man’s name came to be a virtual cliche for betrayal?

Benedict Arnold: a name that has become synonymous with betrayal. However, this wasn’t always the case. At one time he was General (and future first President) George Washington’s trusted advisor in the struggle against the British. What caused this turncoat to turn his revolutionary ambitions inside out to match the crimson of the British? What brought on one of the most famous treacheries in history?

George Washington: A Life From Beginning to End (President Biographies Book 1)

Consider, if for only a moment, how different a nation we might exist, if a different man had been America’s first Commander in Chief, the first man to stand as the President of the United States of America.

He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country’s military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country.

The Culper Ring: A Captivating Guide to George Washington’s Spy Ring

This book may not be written in the most action packed of manners… but the story is compelling in it’s own right.  Take a look back through time, and view the roots of modern spycraft.

Based in New York during the British occupation, the Culper Ring provided vital intelligence from behind enemy lines. Their work gave Washington an insight into the British forces and their plans. They helped to turn the war in the revolutionaries’ favour.

The True Story of Andersonville Prison: A Defense of Major Henry Wirz: The Prisoners and Their Keepers, Daily Life at Prison

Many American families have stories in their family histories of family members fighting against one another in the Civil War.  It was a period in our nation’s history that divided our country not just by states, but within families as well.  Some stories are even told of family members of more distant relations, second and third cousins, who realized they were related to one another, after the battle had been fought, and one family member had captured the other, and was responsible for seeing a distant relation confined as a Prisoner of War.  Letters exist from soldier’s writing home to tell their family’s they had no idea a person existed until they got to talking, and realized they had the same great-grandparents… that their grandparents had come from the same place… and began to realize how easily their roles could have been reversed.

This book written by James Madison Page, a Northern soldier, represents an important narrative of Andersonville prison in Georgia. Madison brings his defense of the prison commander Henry Wirz, who was charged by the U.S. Government and executed after the Civil War. The author’s description of the trial, conviction, and execution of Wirz is extremely sympathetic and provides an alternative view of the Confederacy in the Civil War.

Today we are featuring not only a concise book about Abraham Lincoln, but also copies of the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation Proclamation.  Some may have read them in school… and not since, others may recall being assigned them in school, and that is as far as the memory goes.  Regardless, there are times when it is worth looking back on the words that shaped, guided and changed a nation.

Rosa Parks: The Woman Who Ignited a Movement

Rosa Parks was a quiet, dignified African-American woman who, in a world of injustice, decided to politely defy a racist policy. In doing so, she ignited a fire in the soul of a community whose “cup of endurance” would permit not even one more comparatively small injustice. Her case resulted in the Montgomery Bus Boycott wherein some 40,000 African-Americans crippled the Montgomery transportation industry with their non-violent protest of the racist policy that mandated Parks to give up her seat for white riders. But, as an unknown black minister was who elected to lead the boycott protest, one Martin Luther King, Jr., noted, it wasn’t just the bus policy the African-American community was protesting, it was over 100 years of horrific injustice heaped upon a community whose founders had been forcibly brought to the United States.

Slave Narratives: a Folk History of Slavery in the United States From Interviews with Former Slaves Texas Narratives

William Colbert, Age 93. Alabama United States, 1936. Between 1936 and 1938. Photograph. Retrieved from the Library of Congress, https://www.loc.gov/item/mesnp010081/. (Accessed January 31, 2018.)

There are aspects of our history, as a nation, that are hard for those of us alive today to fathom.  Whether it is because we think we, as a culture, have moved beyond that point.  Or because we simply do not want to believe we, as a culture, ever tolerated such behavior.  There are any number of reasons why parts of our history make us wince, and want to look away.

There are any number of reactions we can have when we read about the saddest, and hardest moments, in our nation’s past.  But, perhaps, one of them could be to acknowledge we have made, at least a little, progress.  We have taken steps, if only baby steps, forward.  To rededicate ourselves to improving our nation, the lives not only of those in our homes, but in our wider community, and our nation at large.  To remind ourselves, in learning from the past, that it takes effort to strive for, and create, a better future.

We are capable of creating that better future, just as those who came before us struggled, and worked hard, and created a better world for us to live in.  Perhaps that is the most important cycle of life we can focus on, and strive to contribute to… doing all we can to make sure the next generation never suffers as those before us did.

Today’s book is first hand accounts of life as slaves in America.  More information, and more stories, can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/connections/narratives-slavery/file.html

Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project, 1936-1938, contains more than 2,300 first-person accounts of slavery and 500 black-and-white photographs of former slaves collected as part of the Federal Writers’ Project of the Works Progress Administration.
