Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

As a child, I recall kids finding it endlessly humorous this time of year to ask as if it were a great riddle: do you know who the title character of Frankenstein is?  The monster — or the Doctor who created the monster?

Perhaps it is because it seems a great many know the story of Frankenstein, and yet not quite as many have actually read the story, that everyone is certain the know the answer to the question, and will argue for their answer, without feeling the need to reach for their trusty copy of Mary Shelley‘s tale to reveal the answer once and for all.

Then again, there are some of us, who when we close our eyes and think of Frankenstein’s Monster (yes, sorry, Frankenstein was the Dr… Dr. Victor Frankenstein) prefer to think of poor misunderstood Herman Munster.

Robert Louis Stevenson – The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

It is the complete package that makes us who we are, every aspect of our personalities, the lives we have led, our experiences and how we have dealt with them that have in turn helped to shape who we are today.  But what if we could chose to change some part of us… or perhaps remove the negative, would that automatically make us a better person?  Or do we need our inner struggles, and impulses, to help us achieve a balance between good and evil that ultimately helps us to define who we are as a person?

These are the themes Robert Louis Stevenson sought to explore in his work The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  A work that introduced the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde” into our language, and brought the concept of split personality to the attention of many for whom the concept was previously hard to imagine.

John William Polidori’s Vampyre

Yesterday, when we decided to share Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it was in part because he is considered by many to be the most famous literary vampire, and by others he is considered to be the Vampire that launched the genre.  With that second thought in mind we spent a few seconds on the internet searching to see if we could discover where Dracula truly fell in the history of literary vampires, and quickly discovered a work reputed to be among the earliest, and quite possibly responsible for the genre that is now so widely known and enjoyed.

Today, we look further back, towards the beginning of a genre many can’t help but think of this time of year.

{John William Polidori’s} The Vampyre: A Tale is based on a fragment written by Lord Byron in 1816 during a gathering of author friends who, trapped inside due to bad weather, decided to write ghost stories. It was the first vampire story in English prose, and as such had a wide-ranging influence, almost single-handedly creating the now-popular image of the vampire as an aristocratic seducer.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Another favorite story of this time of year is Dracula, and yet again it is about a character who has found his way into movies, and onto television screens over the decades.

While Dracula might be the most famous of Vampires to appear in fiction, a little trip around the internet reveals he was not the first literary vampire.  Per Wikipedia:

The literary vampire first appeared in 18th-century poetry, before becoming one of the stock figures of gothic fiction with the publication of Polidori‘s The Vampyre (1819), which was inspired by the life and legend of Lord Byron.

Solomon Kane by Robert E Howard

Solomon Kane is one of the many stories we have selected that many people first discovered through a movie, and in some cases were surprised to find originated as stories and books.   First published in the 1920s, Solomon Kane is described in several places as:

A late 16th–early 17th century Puritan, Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms.

H.P. Lovecraft Complete Collection

When choosing books for our end of October / Halloween, some might call it not just genre, but Horror, collection, H.P. Lovecraft is an author that leaps to mind, but which one work of his to choose?  The decision was made simpler by a finding a Complete Collection.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre.

Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow

As October winds down there is a genre that seems to leap to everyone’s mind (or at least the minds of most television show writers).  With that in mind we have a special eBook collection coming together over the next few days, and our first selection for it is Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow.

Some may know Sleepy Hollow from the fairly recent Television show that lasted a few seasons, or the film’s that have been inspired by the work… for those who have not had a chance to read this work, perhaps now is the right time to take your first visit back to the original town of Sleepy Hollow.

North of New York City lies Sleepy Hollow, a secluded glen rumored to be the home of countless phantoms and specters. Chief among them is the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a Hessian soldier whose head was removed by a stray cannonball in the Revolutionary War. He rides across the glen each night and disappears in a flash of fire and brimstone at the bridge near the Old Dutch Burial Ground.

Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolteacher who recently arrived from Connecticut…

Plato – Apology

Plato’s Apology is not an apology in the modern sense, … here is what one description of the book has to say, that might help explain the title:

The Apology of Socrates is Plato’s version of the speech given by Socrates as he unsuccessfully defended himself in 399BCE against the charges of “corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel” (24b). “Apology” here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word “apologia”) of speaking in defense of a cause or of one’s beliefs or actions.

Socrates

One of the founders of Western Philosophy lived, and died, hundreds of years before the Common Era.  Over Two Thousand years ago he put forward ideas that many of us are still wanting to learn, and trying to learn from, suggested pearls of wisdom that contain to retain their value, and meaning, the passage of time not diminishing them in the least.

Socrates: The Little Black Book is a collection of over 100 quotes from this ancient thinker known for the Socratic Method, well, that and his death.  Many who know little about Socrates know about the man who was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock.  He was charged with the crime was corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, and not believing in the gods of the State, and while it believed by almost everyone that he had the opportunity to escape, he stayed, and faced his fate — and his death.

Mahatma Gandhi.: The Little Black Book

Today’s book is full of words of wisdom, proverbial food for thought, and generally speaking, bits of profound yet simple thinking that remind us why Mahatma Gandhi became known the world over.

It hardly seems right, or fair, to try and sum his life up in just a few sentences, but these facts from Wikipedia begin to give context to the quotes in the volume we chose for today.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi lived from the 2nd October 1869 to the 30th of  January 1948.  He was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Mahatma Gandhi.: The Little Black Book is not a perfect book, it does however share a collection of over 100 quotes from this influential and compelling leader, which makes it worth giving a look.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

Mark Twain‘s sense of humor is on display in this edition of the Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, a volume that contains some bonus material bound to amuse those who enjoy the peculiarities of language, and who have tried, even once upon a time, to translate anything, from one language to another.  As the publishers description on Amazon says:

Containing the original story (in english), a french translation which was published in la Revue des Deux Mondes and which Twain finds to be a travesty of the original text, and Twain’s re-translation of the french back into english, word for word (this is where things degenerate). A masterpiece of babelfishien nonsense dating from well before babelfish was even a gleam in the binary code of its creator (1903). Best appreciated if you can read both French and English, but even if you skip the french version it’s truly brilliant. If you have ever translated random text using babelfish just because it’s funny, don’t miss this book.

As good old Samuel Clemens himself put it in his foreword “I cannot speak the French language, but I can translate very well, though not fast, I being self-educated.”

Friday the 13th felt like the kind of day when a work by Edgar Allan Poe would make a good selection, so today The Raven is our choice.

The Dream Classics description of the Raven on Amazon sums things up nicely:

The Raven is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven’s mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man’s slow fall into madness.

A Modern Cinderella

Another Louisa May Alcott selection, this one a few short stories that may be a rare find in the eyes of some readers, but no less endearing.  This volume, A Modern Cinderella, begins with “How It Was Lost” and this tale includes quips such as:

I don’t blame poor Sally for wanting to get away from this place now and then. I think I could find it in my heart to murder an imaginary friend or two, if I had to stay here long.

Louisa May Alcott captures the dynamics of family life, of siblings seeing one another through the filters of their passions, and drives… but also appreciating one another when a bit of perspective is introduced into their life, and doing so in a manner the underscores the fact they never meant to take one another for granted, or neglect to appreciate one another, we simply all have a knack for getting caught up in our own lives.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Columbus Day Weekend we had a theme of exploration and adventure in our picks and recommendations.  As the middle of the week is upon us, perhaps a bit more adventure is called for, and with that in mind we offer a collection of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s Adventure Tales.  The author of Treasure Island put pen to paper for a variety of other stories as well, including Kidnapped, Catriona, and the oft mentioned Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
