World History

Trying to sum up the history of the World in a concise book, find the events that define our collective history, or choose the figures who did the most to shape it is no easy task.  No one book is going to contain everything that comes to mind for every individual when they think about World History, and as for placing events and people on a scale and choosing whose contributions were greatest, which events were most Earth changing?  It is a task I’m grateful I’ve never taken on.

Today we are featuring a selection of books that have made an attempt and telling the story of World History, of picking the events and figures who have helped shape the world in which we now live.

Copies of half a dozen World History books (see product carousel below) have been added to the current CheerUp.Fun Free eBook Collection.  The first 100 people to sign up (new collection as of Feb 1) should receive a free copy added to their Kindle Library.  To sign up, click this link, and follow the prompts at the Amazon page.  Once you have joined the CheerUp.Fun Free eBook Collection, as recommended books are selected and shared during the month, they will be added to your Kindle Library.

In the late 1880s and early 1890s, the introduction of electricity brought with it two competing systems of electric power transmission. A powerful individual backed each system.

On one side was Thomas Edison, the savvy inventor and businessman. On the other side was inventor and industrialist George Westinghouse.

The two of them got embroiled in a nasty confrontation as each of them fought to ensure his system would become the industry standard.

What wove the African continent into the rich fabric of cultures and peoples that it is today?

Where did ancient culture, trade, and civilization begin?

How did the African people survive and thrive despite European colonization and apartheid?

These are just some of the questions you’ll find answers to in African History: From Ancient Egypt to Modern South Africa-Stories, People, and Events that Shaped the History of Africa.

Africa is a vast continent whose waters, fertile lands, minerals, and diverse wildlife nurtured humankind since ancient times until European colonization and exploitation caused immeasurable suffering and loss. To understand how Africa developed, thrived, suffered, and emerged into the rich tapestry of peoples that it is today, take a trip back to the ancient River Nile and the East African coast.

Santa – American Mythology?

Most American Mythology, and stories we teach our children to “believe” in, are borrowed from other countries.  Two quick and easy examples that come to mind are Robin Hood and King Arthur, both from England.

LFrank Baum, was an American author chiefly famous for his children’s books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels.

L. Frank Baum also wrote A Kidnapped Santa Claus.  Santa Claus is an international figure, but he is one that American’s have taken a special hold of, making countless movies involving him.

King Arthur inspires those who believe to use Might For Right, setting aside the concept of Might Is Right.  At the Round Table there is no head, making all equal.  Perhaps it is safe to even say, King Arthur created a place modern man wishes still existed.

Those inclined to believe in faeries, the little people, and leprechauns, for instance, may find a lot that intrigues and interests them in Celtic Mythology.

The gifted W.B. Yeats wrote of his own people “…even a newspaperman, if you entice him into a cemetery at midnight, will believe in phantoms, for everyone is a visionary if you scratch him deep enough. But the Celt, unlike any other, is a visionary without scratching.” This introduction to Celtic Mythology will serve the novice well – for it is a complicated history with the earliest written records destroyed by the marauding Vikings.

Benedict Arnold: a name that has become synonymous with betrayal. However, this wasn’t always the case. The True Story of Andersonville Prison: A Defense of Major Henry Wirz: The Prisoners and Their Keepers, Daily Life at Prison

Many American families have stories in their family histories of family members fighting against one another in the Civil War.  It was a period in our nation’s history that divided our country not just by states, but within families as well.  Some stories are even told of family members of more distant relations, second and third cousins, who realized they were related to one another, after the battle had been fought, and one family member had captured the other, and was responsible for seeing a distant relation confined as a Prisoner of War.  Letters exist from soldier’s writing home to tell their family’s they had no idea a person existed until they got to talking, and realized they had the same great-grandparents… that their grandparents had come from the same place… and began to realize how easily their roles could have been reversed.

Madison brings his defense of the prison commander Henry Wirz, who was charged by the U.S. Government and executed after the Civil War. Rosa Parks: The Woman Who Ignited a Movement

Rosa Parks was a quiet, dignified African-American woman who, in a world of injustice, decided to politely defy a racist policy. In doing so, she ignited a fire in the soul of a community whose “cup of endurance” would permit not even one more comparatively small injustice. Her case resulted in the Montgomery Bus Boycott wherein some 40,000 African-Americans crippled the Montgomery transportation industry with their non-violent protest of the racist policy that mandated Parks to give up her seat for white riders. But, as an unknown black minister was who elected to lead the boycott protest, one Martin Luther King, Jr., noted, it wasn’t just the bus policy the African-American community was protesting, it was over 100 years of horrific injustice heaped upon a community whose founders had been forcibly brought to the United States.

Slave Narratives: a Folk History of Slavery in the United States From Interviews with Former Slaves Texas Narratives

William Colbert, Age 93. Alabama United States, 1936. Between 1936 and 1938. Photograph. Retrieved from the Library of Congress, https://www.loc.gov/item/mesnp010081/. (Accessed January 31, 2018.)

There are aspects of our history, as a nation, that are hard for those of us alive today to fathom.  Whether it is because we think we, as a culture, have moved beyond that point.  Or because we simply do not want to believe we, as a culture, ever tolerated such behavior.  There are any number of reasons why parts of our history make us wince, and want to look away.

There are any number of reactions we can have when we read about the saddest, and hardest moments, in our nation’s past.  But, perhaps, one of them could be to acknowledge we have made, at least a little, progress.  We have taken steps, if only baby steps, forward.  To rededicate ourselves to improving our nation, the lives not only of those in our homes, but in our wider community, and our nation at large.  To remind ourselves, in learning from the past, that it takes effort to strive for, and create, a better future.

Today’s book is first hand accounts of life as slaves in America.  More information, and more stories, can be found here: http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/connections/narratives-slavery/file.html
