The Scarlet Pimpernel

At it’s most basic elements, the Scarlet Pimpernel is the story of a man, and his friends, working to save the lives of those who are being persecuted because of an aspect of their life determined not by their choices, but by their birth.   Viewed from that very high concept level, it becomes a story in which we can find story points that remain relevant more than a hundred years after hit was written, and closer to two centuries after the setting of the story’s events.

Anthony Hope – Prisoner of Zenda

Written in the 1890s the Prisoner of Zenda is a grand adventure story about a man who looks so very much like a distant cousin, who happens to be of some import, what with his being a Prince and all, that he is able to step into said cousin’s shoes, if only for a day, and help him out of a spot of trouble.  But as is so often the case, the best laid plans go awry, for all concerned, and that’s when things get truly interesting.

Veterans Day – World War II

Every year we set aside two days where we think about those who have served our country in the Military.  On Memorial Day we remember those who paid the ultimate price, and did not return home.  For those who served that is a hard day, because they find themselves recalling, all too clearly, the friends who served along side them, but did not return home with them.

Veterans day is when we thank those who did return home for their service.  To some that has become a trite expression, to others the words pale in comparison to the events they all too clearly bring to mind.  It is a day when some Veterans will put on some article of clothing that alerts others to their service, and others will avoid such outward signs of their time in the service.  The amount of time they spent in uniform bears no connection to that decision from what I have seen, each is simply finding their way forward the only way they know how.

Fewer and fewer World War II Veterans stand among us these days, perhaps making it more important than ever to remember the lessons of their lives.  Having met some of the Nisei, Americans whose parents had immigrated from Japan, and heard their story from them first hand, in a one on one situation (well, more like 7 or 8 of them, and 1 teenage me), having listened to them talk about how important it was to them, as Americans, to be allowed to fight for their country, I encourage my peers to reach out to those who experienced the World at War, the war that came after “The Great War” that a generation had hoped would be “the War to end all Wars”, and hear what they have to say, while they are still here to say it.

Dave Dawson at Truk by R. Sidney Bowen

Part of a series of books written for teen readers, Dave Dawson at Truk is a novel set in WWII, written by a man who served as an aviator in WWI.  As Xist Classics notes in their about the author section:

R. Sidney Bowen was an author, journalist, fighter pilot and magazine editor born in Boston in 1900 and died in Hawaii at the age of 76. Best known for his various series of adventure books for boys during WWII, he seemingly based his main character in this series, Dave Dawson, after himself and his flying adventures during World War I.

Meditations of Marcus Aurelius

Of all the far off places books can take us, some of those most awe-inspiring, are into the hearts and minds of those who lived in times gone by.  Part of that comes from the simple realization that so many of the topics, and issues they write about, and thoughts they share, remain relevant decades, and centuries later.

Marcus Aurelius was Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD.  In this book, Meditations, we are given a chance to read his writings, his thoughts, and for a moment, travel back in time, and realize that some things are timeless.

William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar

Believed to have been written in 1599, the Shakespeare play Julius Caesar is about events famously known for taking place on the Ides of March.  As the description of this Dream Classics edition notes:

Although the title of the play is Julius Caesar, Caesar is not the central character in its action; he appears in only three scenes, and is killed at the beginning of the third act. The protagonist of the play is Marcus Brutus, and the central psychological drama is his struggle between the conflicting demands of honour, patriotism, and friendship.

Henry David Thoreau – Civil Disobedience

A challenge to his readers, to the people of a still somewhat young America, Henry David Thoreau‘s Civil Disobedience, written in 1849 called upon those who would listen to let their government know how they felt, and what they wanted, not through violence or uprisings, but through Civil Disobedience.   One of his more interesting arguments might be summed up in current terms as “vote with your pocket books.”  In his case, he was opposed to paying his property tax, not wanting to support his State, or the government thereof, which he felt was not meetings either the needs, or demands, of those it governed.  He had strong opinions on the topics of the time, Slavery, and the Mexican-American War, and by the tone of this essay, sounds confident his fellow citizens likewise have opinions, likely strong ones as well, but are in need of a way to make them known to those in a position to use that information, and hopefully act on it.

While not an easy read, written in the style of the mid-1800s, this is something many of us read in school, and there is a reason.  This short read will hopefully inspire thought, not just about the time and world in which Henry David Thoreau lived, but the times in which we are living, and how we can act, and what we can do, to create the world in which we want to live.

Sun Tzu – The Art of War

The more I work on this project of selecting a book a day to share with others, the more I find myself encountering books that countless people have referenced to me, and yet when I’ve asked them “Was it a good read?” they have sheepishly admitted they have never actually read it, but they know all about it.  Whether it is because they learned about it in school, heard about it from friends, read an article about it somewhere that referred to it so extensively they felt that had gotten the meat of the book within the article, or through some other means they felt the bulk of the content had been imparted to them, the fact remains that often we have had so much contact with the byproducts of a work that we do not always know whether or not we have gone back to the well, and had a first hand interaction with the source itself.

For me, the Art of War, a deceptively short read it turns out, is such a work.  I have heard it referred to so many times over the years that I feel as though I must have heard every portion of it, though undoubtedly out of context, and in odd fragments, and yet I know I have not paid a visit to this particular well — until now.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

As a child, I recall kids finding it endlessly humorous this time of year to ask as if it were a great riddle: do you know who the title character of Frankenstein is?  The monster — or the Doctor who created the monster?

Perhaps it is because it seems a great many know the story of Frankenstein, and yet not quite as many have actually read the story, that everyone is certain the know the answer to the question, and will argue for their answer, without feeling the need to reach for their trusty copy of Mary Shelley‘s tale to reveal the answer once and for all.

Then again, there are some of us, who when we close our eyes and think of Frankenstein’s Monster (yes, sorry, Frankenstein was the Dr… Dr. Victor Frankenstein) prefer to think of poor misunderstood Herman Munster.
