Benedict Arnold: a name that has become synonymous with betrayal. However, this wasn’t always the case. At one time he was General (and future first President) George Washington’s trusted advisor in the struggle against the British. What caused this turncoat to turn his revolutionary ambitions inside out to match the crimson of the British? What brought on one of the most famous treacheries in history?

He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country’s military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country.

Today we are featuring not only a concise book about Abraham Lincoln, but also copies of the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation Proclamation.  Some may have read them in school… and not since, others may recall being assigned them in school, and that is as far as the memory goes.  Regardless, there are times when it is worth looking back on the words that shaped, guided and changed a nation.

Rosa Parks: The Woman Who Ignited a Movement

Rosa Parks was a quiet, dignified African-American woman who, in a world of injustice, decided to politely defy a racist policy. In doing so, she ignited a fire in the soul of a community whose “cup of endurance” would permit not even one more comparatively small injustice. Her case resulted in the Montgomery Bus Boycott wherein some 40,000 African-Americans crippled the Montgomery transportation industry with their non-violent protest of the racist policy that mandated Parks to give up her seat for white riders. But, as an unknown black minister was who elected to lead the boycott protest, one Martin Luther King, Jr., noted, it wasn’t just the bus policy the African-American community was protesting, it was over 100 years of horrific injustice heaped upon a community whose founders had been forcibly brought to the United States.

American Civil War: A History From Beginning to End by Hourly History

☆☆☆ American Civil War ☆☆☆

Beginning with the birth of the nation, slavery divided and caused conflict for the United States of America, worsening during the country’s early decades as the practice became more economically vital. Finally, in 1861, the American Civil War erupted after the election of President Abraham Lincoln. Never acknowledging the South’s right to secede, Lincoln and the North fought the South through four long, bloody, destructive years; much longer than anyone thought the war would last.

Inside you will read about…

✓ America in the Antebellum Era
✓ Secession and the First Shots
✓ Early Battles and the Turning Point: April 1861-July 1863
✓ The United States and the Confederacy
✓ Women and Blacks in the War
✓ Military Events, 1863-1865: The War Ends
✓ Reconstruction
✓ The Legacy of the Civil War

By 1865, more than 700,000 American soldiers and civilians were dead (including Lincoln himself), a race of people had been freed from bondage, and an entire country needed to rebuild. The Civil War is of such crucial importance to the history of the United States not just because of these factors, but also because its legacy still lives on.

Columbus: From Beginning to End

It can be easy to simply let three day weekends come along, and enjoy the time off from responsibilities and things we would rather not be doing, and not take a moment to recall why they were put on the calendars in the first place.

Columbus Day is a holiday that is seen from a variety of perspectives, for a lot of reasons.    When I think of Columbus day, I think of exploration, of people who were looking for a new way, a new path, to a known destination.  People who are willing to take chances and try new things.

There are few places on Earth that have been left unexplored at this point, whether they have been explored by humans, or technology, which perhaps is why the current generation of explorers is looking to the stars (and the deepest, darkest depths of the seas) more and more.

This is a chance to imagine, and think about, life hundreds of years ago — to think about how different travel was, and the adventure of those explorers who were daring to try something new… and also to realize how far our cultures and societies have come, and perhaps think about ways in which we can continue to explore, and improve, the world around us.

King Arthur

For hundreds of years King Arthur has reigned over the imaginations of young and old alike.  The appeal of this mythic King has been so profound that not only have readers the early stories about him, like Thomas Malory’s Le Mort D’Arthur, but authors have continued to visit Camelot and King Arthur’s court, up to and including a visit from by a Connecticut Yankee courtesy of Mark Twain.

Hourly History’s King Arthur: A Life From Beginning to End is an interesting read that provides an overview of the Myth of King Arthur in the context of the history of Britain, highlighting how the Myth changed and evolved as the British Isles underwent invasions and cultural changes.  The Myth was adapted and evolved as the needs of those who were reading, and enjoying it, changed… King Arthur was, truly, a leader for all times, and all generations.

Confucius

It seems that, for many, prefacing an expression with “Confucius says” means it will be witty, wise, clever, and not only worth hearing, but worth reflecting on.  As a result, some jokingly preface their own safe words with “Confucius says” in an attempt to add weight to them, or as a humorous way to get their friends to listen.

If you look beyond the joke however, you see a deeper meaning and truth — that a man who lived over 2000 years ago is still considered witty, and wise.  That the lessons he sought to teach are still considered with reflecting on and learning from.

Whether or not you are a follower of what Westerners have dubbed Confucianism, it seems remarkable that pearls of wisdom from 2000 years ago have not only persisted, but remained relevant for so many generations.

Confucius: A Life From Beginning to End is an Hourly History read seeking to give a little background information and context on who Confucius was, reminding the reader he was a real man, noting his goal was to make the world around him a better place, and his words of wisdom were designed to help his students do so.

Confucius, Mencius, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xunzi: Selected Passages from the Chinese Philosophers in The Path features passages not only from Confucius, but two of his students as well as other Chinese Philosophers.  If you are looking for something to think about, you may just find it here.

Mayflower

For anyone looking to refresh their memory on the story of the Mayflower, this book (Mayflower: A History From Beginning to End by Hourly History) may be worth the hour it takes to read.

As one Amazon reviewers notes, the authors do not stick 100 percent to the history we were taught in school, but they do give a nice recap of the religious situation in England, and Europe, that led to the Pilgrims choosing to set out for a new country, a reminder that the New World was not actually their first attempt in leaving England, and perhaps most importantly, they spend a moment on the simple reminder that Pilgrim and Puritan are not interchangeable words, but do in fact have separate meanings, referring to different groups.

One of the interesting thoughts conveyed in the book is that some of the founding principles and ideals that the United States of America has since taken to heart, and been built upon, were not necessarily intended to be set as precedents with the intent that a nation would look back to them as guiding principles.  The Pilgrims were seeking a place they could live, free from Religious persecution… but did they realize they would be setting an example of Religious tolerance for all who followed them to the New World’s shores?  The Mayflower Compact was drafted and signed because the Mayflower did not land where it had expected to… because the contract they had traveled on did not seem to apply to the land on which they were about to settle.  Were they, in setting pen to paper in the manner they did, purposely setting an example of Democratic governing?

Whether you just want to take a moment to reflect on the journey of some of the first immigrants to the United States, or are seeking to brush up on a little US History before your children hit this topic in school, this quick read hits the high points of the Mayflower’s journey, the reason the Pilgrim’s took it, and touches on the hardships they faced upon arrival.
